FAQ's
There is often a little more to choosing something for your home than colour and size. The fabric, the way it is made, how it feels and how it will live with you all matter too.
We work with natural fabrics, traditional printing techniques and small-batch production, so some of our pieces may have the small variations that come with being made by hand. This is part of what makes each piece feel considered and individual.
Here are some of the questions we are asked most often about our products, materials, craft and care.
Cushion Covers
What are Deodar cushion covers made from?
Our cushion covers are primarily made from natural fibers like cottons and linens, chosen for their texture, comfort and ability to age beautifully. Depending on the collection, you will also find other carefully selected fabrics and finishes.
Are Deodar cushion covers hand block printed?
Many of our cushion covers feature traditional hand block printing, where carved wooden blocks are dipped in dye and stamped onto the fabric by hand. Because each piece passes through a human hand, small variations in placement, colour and impression are natural.
What cushion cover sizes does Deodar offer?
Our core square cushion sizes are 18 × 18 inches and 20 × 20 inches, alongside selected rectangular styles such as lumbar cushions in 14 x 20 inches. The size available varies by collection and design.
If you are unsure which size will work best for your sofa, bed or armchair, our Cushion Cover Size Guide can help.
What size insert should I use?
Measure your cushion covers, we recommend choosing an insert that matches the finished dimensions of the cushion cover so that it fits properly and gives the cushion its intended shape. The type and firmness of the filling will also affect how full the cushion looks.
How should I care for my cushion covers?
Care varies according to the fabric and finish, so always check the care instructions on the individual product page before washing. Natural fabrics and hand printed textiles are best treated gently.
For more on choosing and caring for different fabrics, see our guides to cotton cushion covers] and linen cushion covers and How to care for block prints.
Can I mix different cushion prints and sizes?
Absolutely. In fact, mixing prints, textures and sizes is often what makes a room feel collected rather than overly matched. Start with a common colour or tone and let the patterns vary around it. Most of our past and current collections are designed with a thought that they can be mixed up.

Bed Linen
What fabrics are Deodar bedsheets made from?
We primarily work with Percale cottons for comfort, breathability and everyday use. Our collections include different weaves and finishes, so the feel can vary from one collection to another.
What does thread count mean?
Thread count refers to the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric. It can be a useful reference, but it does not tell you everything about how a bed sheet will feel. Fibre quality, weave and finishing also play an important part.
What bedsheet sizes does Deodar offer?
Our bedsheets are available in sizes designed for commonly used Indian bed dimensions. Please check the individual product listing for exact measurements, as sizing can vary between collections.
How should I wash Deodar bedsheets?
Always follow the care instructions provided with the individual product. As a general rule, natural cotton textiles benefit from gentle washing, mild detergents and drying away from harsh direct sunlight.
Will natural cotton shrink?
Natural cotton can experience some shrinkage when washed, particularly if it has not been heavily treated or pre-shrunk. The amount varies according to the fabric and finishing process, which is why we recommend following the care instructions for each product.
How do I choose the right bedsheet?
Think about your mattress size and depth first, then consider the fabric, weave, print and overall feel you want in the room.
Our Bedsheet Buying Guide goes into more detail on choosing the right bedsheet for your bedroom.
Bedspreads & Quilts
What is the difference between a bedspread and a quilted bedspread?
A bedspread is primarily a decorative and layering piece, while a quilted bedspread has layers of fabric and filling stitched together to provide additional warmth and texture.
What are Deodar quilted bedspreads filled with?
Our quilted bedspreads use soft cotton filling, chosen to provide comfortable warmth without making the bed feel excessively heavy keeping the tropical warm weather of India at the core.
Can I use a quilted bedspread throughout the year?
Yes. Quilted bedspreads are particularly versatile in the Indian climate. They can be used on their own in milder weather , under air conditioning or layered over your regular bedding when you need more warmth.
Are Deodar bedspreads reversible?
Most are designed to be reversible, giving you two ways to style the bed. Please check the individual product description to see whether a particular design is reversible.
How should I care for a quilted bedspread?
Because quilted pieces contain several layers, gentle washing and careful drying are important. Always follow the care instructions provided with the individual product.
Table Linen
What tablecloth sizes does Deodar offer?
Our tablecloths are available in different sizes to suit a variety of dining tables. The exact dimensions are listed on each product page.
How do I choose the right tablecloth size?
Start with the length and width of your table, then decide how much drop you would like on each side. For everyday dining, a shorter drop can feel relaxed and practical; for a more dressed table, you may prefer a little more length.
What fabrics are your table linens made from?
We work primarily with natural cotton and linen fabrics, depending on the collection. Each fabric brings a slightly different character to the table, from the crispness of cotton to the relaxed texture of linen.
Can I use printed table linen every day?
Of course. We like our table linen to be used rather than saved for a special occasion. A block printed tablecloth can be just as lovely for a Tuesday lunch as it is for a festive gathering.
Can I mix different table linen prints?
Yes. You do not need every piece on the table to match. Try bringing together prints that share a colour, then balance them with a plain or quieter textile.
Our guide to choosing and styling table linen explores this in more detail.
How should I care for block printed table linen?
Always follow the care instructions for the individual piece. Gentle washing and avoiding harsh detergents will help preserve both the fabric and the print over time.
Lamps & Lighting
What are Deodar lamps made from?
Our lamps combine carefully selected materials such as wood, brass, iron and fabric, depending on the design. We look for materials and proportions that give each lamp a sense of warmth and character.
What kind of bulb should I use?
The recommended bulb type and wattage can vary between lamps. Please check the specifications on the individual product page before purchasing or installing a bulb.
Where can I use a Deodar lamp?
Our lamps are designed for different corners of the home, from bedside tables and consoles to desks and reading spaces. The right placement depends on the scale of the lamp and the kind of light you want to create.
What kind of light is best for a warm, inviting room?
Warm white light generally creates a softer and more comfortable atmosphere, particularly in living rooms, bedrooms and reading corners. Layering different sources of light can also make a room feel more inviting than relying on a single overhead light.
Scarves & Accessories
What fabrics are Deodar scarves made from?
Our scarves are made from carefully selected natural fabrics, including silk in some collections. Each product page includes the fabric composition and care instructions.
Are Deodar scarves hand block printed?
Selected scarves feature traditional hand block printing. As with our home textiles, small variations in the print are part of the handmade process.
How should I care for a silk scarf?
Silk requires gentle handling and dry clean. Always follow the specific care instructions provided with the product.
Are Deodar accessories suitable for gifting?
Many of our smaller textiles and accessories make thoughtful gifts, particularly when you are looking for something useful, beautifully made and a little different from the usual gift.
Hand Block Printing & Craft
What is hand block printing?
Hand block printing is a traditional textile printing technique in which a design is carved into a wooden block. The block is dipped into dye and pressed onto the fabric, one impression at a time.
Why do hand block printed textiles have variations?
Unlike machine printing, hand block printing is done by hand, so each impression can have tiny differences in pressure, placement and ink coverage. You may notice slight variations or occasional irregularities in the print. These are natural characteristics of the process rather than flaws.
Where are Deodar's textiles made?
We work with skilled artisans and craft communities across India, including traditional block printing communities in Rajasthan, Weavers in Gujrat and Bihar. Our pieces are produced in small batches with as low as 20 pieces sometimes.
What are Bagru and Sanganeri printing?
Bagru and Sanganeri are traditional printing styles from Rajasthan, each with its own history, motifs, colours and techniques. Both are part of India's rich textile printing heritage and continue to evolve through contemporary design.
Are Deodar textiles made with AZO-free dyes?
Deodar textiles are made using AZO-free dyes. The material and care information for each product provides the relevant details.
Why do handmade textiles cost more than mass-produced textiles?
Handmade textiles involve skilled labour, slower production and processes that cannot simply be replicated at the speed of industrial manufacturing. We work in small batches because we value the craft, the people behind it and the character that comes from making things this way.
Care, Orders & Shipping
How do I find the right care instructions for my product?
The most reliable place to check is the individual product page. Different fabrics, prints and constructions can require different care, so we recommend following the instructions provided for your specific piece.
Why can natural fabrics change slightly after washing?
Natural fibres can respond to washing, moisture, heat and drying. A small amount of change in texture or dimensions can be part of the natural behaviour of cotton and linen. Following the recommended care instructions helps minimise this.
Why might the colour of a hand printed textile vary slightly from the photograph?
Hand printing and natural-looking textiles can have subtle variations in colour and print. Screen settings and lighting during photography can also affect how a colour appears.
How long does my order take to dispatch?
Dispatch times can vary depending on the product and whether it is ready to ship or made in a small batch. Ready to dispatch products are shipped within 3 workings days of receiving the order.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes, we offer international shipping. Shipping availability, delivery times and applicable freight charges depend on the destination. Please write to us on @support@deodar.in for international orders.
Can I return or exchange an item?

A Note on Handmade
A small variation in a block print, a slightly different texture in linen or the gentle character of a natural fabric are all part of the reason we are drawn to handmade things.
At Deodar, we believe a home does not need everything to be perfectly uniform. The pieces we choose should have a little character, be useful enough to live with and, ideally, become more familiar and loved with time.
